May 2025 TANF Benefits: How Much and When You’ll Get Paid

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is a vital support system for low-income families across the United States.

Backed by federal funding but managed by individual states, TANF helps families cover essential living costs—from food and housing to childcare and transportation.

Designed for families with children under 18 facing financial hardship, TANF offers direct monthly financial support.

Depending on state policies, some families receive up to $503 per month.

What Does TANF Cover?

TANF benefits can be used for a range of basic needs, including:

  • Food and clothing

  • Rent and utilities

  • Childcare services

  • Transportation and phone bills

This assistance helps stabilize households during periods of economic instability and supports parents in maintaining a safe, healthy home environment.
