New Work Rules Hit SNAP Recipients Ages 18–54 in June 2025

As of June 2025, millions of Americans relying on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) will face new federal rules that may impact eligibility, benefit amounts, and how SNAP funds can be used.

This guide outlines all the key changes, how they affect you, and what steps you need to take to keep your food assistance uninterrupted.

What’s Changing for SNAP in 2025?

1. Expanded Work Requirements

New guidelines now require more recipients to meet work-related conditions to maintain eligibility.

Who is affected:

To keep receiving SNAP, affected recipients must:

  • Work or be in job training for at least 20 hours per week

  • Enroll in an approved employment or welfare-to-work program

  • Report participation regularly to their SNAP caseworker

Failure to comply may result in losing SNAP eligibility after three months within a 36-month period.

Who Is Exempt from Work Rules?

The following groups are exempt from the new work requirements:

  • Adults caring for dependent children under age 7

  • Individuals aged 55 and older

  • Pregnant individuals

  • Those with certified medical disabilities

  • Veterans and people experiencing homelessness (new for 2025)

Exemptions may vary by state. Always verify with your local SNAP office.

Updated SNAP Income Limits for 2025

To qualify for SNAP, your household’s net monthly income (after deductions) must fall below the following limits:

  • 1-person household: $1,255

  • 2-person household: $1,704

  • 3-person household: $2,152

  • 4-person household: $2,601

  • For each additional person: add $449

These figures reflect 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and may vary slightly by state.

Recertification Deadlines Matter

SNAP recipients must complete recertification on time to avoid benefit interruptions.

Missing the deadline or submitting incomplete information can delay or suspend your payment.

In many states, payment schedules are based on your Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number, which means benefit deposits may vary throughout the month.

To stay on track:

  • Watch for recertification notices

  • Report any household or income changes promptly

  • Respond to all requests for documentation

Proposed Restrictions on SNAP Purchases

Some lawmakers are proposing limits on the types of items SNAP funds can be used for.

Although not yet finalized, suggested restrictions include:

  • Soft drinks and sugary beverages

  • Candy and desserts

  • Ice cream and processed snack foods

Keep an eye on state-specific updates, as policies may differ.

What You Should Do Right Now

To avoid disruptions in your benefits:

  • Confirm your current work status and determine if you’re subject to new requirements

  • Check that all income, household size, and expense data is accurate

  • Complete recertification by the deadline listed by your local office

  • Monitor state updates regarding SNAP-approved food items
